The guy from the film was Ted Neeley - you were close Icky!
It's always seemed like IG never appeared on stage in JC Superstar, but recently I read the following:
'Ian Gillan claimed in interview from around 1971 that he played in Jesus Christ Superstar live on stage for one evening only in a church in New York.'
Simon Robinson, the guy who wrote the booklet for the recent(ish) EMI 6 CD boxed set and general Purple said:
'We've never heard about this. Possibly MCA in America organised a promotional event to launch the Jesus Christ Superstar album in America. I doubt very much if they recorded it. Does anyone else have any more information?'
BTW Have you heard the story that Gillan was offered the film but turned it down?
Although he actually started off singing more or less to get into films (?!) Purple were really taking off at the time. So he said no because of a combination of commitment to the band and the fact they weren't offering him as much money as he was just starting to make with Purple.

: : This was with Ian Gillan? Excellent!
:
: Actually, no. It was with...the guy from the movie...his name escapes me now. I wanna say Tim Neely? No. I would've freaked out if it was Ian Gillan! Even though I was only about seven at the time.
